Has anyone any ideas of creating different road speeds for urban/rural areas using ITN data without having to manually change the speed of each separate road link? I've created a separate settings category and inputted default rural road speeds from some tudies I've come across, but this applies to the whole road network in the study I'm doing, which encompasses an urban area surrounded by a rural hinterland.

Jonathan,

Unfortunately the only editing can be done in Accession, you can import boundary's then clip speeds to within a boundary file, the only problem is that this will change all the road speeds within the area. Unfortunately tile data is imported in a different way - if using TAB or SHP data you can then edit the data in a GIS and when you bring the data across you can select a speed column to bring the speeds in.

Dan,
You say in your message

'..if using TAB or SHP data you can then edit the data in a GIS and when you bring the data across you can select a speed column to bring the speeds in'

Can you tell me at when in the ITN import process does this option to allow users to secify a speed data column occurs? I've looked at the Accession help files on ITN road network importing, and this option is not mentioned.

Hi Jonathan,

Sorry I feel I may have not been clear. ITN data comes as a GML tile of data, this data tile will include the location of the road network along with additional information such as turn restrictions and one way roads. Now in another GIS it is possible to convert this GML file into a SHP or TAB file. Once you have this new file you can add a column, this column could be speed where you would place the speed for that road. Then in Accession you can import this file using the "Other" importer in the road network. Here there is a field matching exercise where you can tell Accession which column has the speed in it.

The only downside of doing this process is that you will lose all the one-way streets and turn restriction information.

Dan,
Thanks for this, do I specify road speeds in miles or kilometres?
